A LITTLE ABOUT KAREN KAY

Karen Kay's love of writing is combined only with her love of the American Indian culture and this is most evident in her writings by her depiction of the Indian way of life, incorporating little known facts with the overall picture of the way the Indian truly lived.

"Hollywood in the 50's and many cowboy/western novels of that time," says Kay, "did not paint a true picture of the American Indian. And anyone who will spend any time researching, will discover this for himself.

"The American Indian was a gentleman, in the true sense of the word. Roaming the prairies, he did not fight or kill the white man until so betrayed and driven by the incoming culture, the Indian had no choice but to turn and defend his homeland.

"My books center upon the American Indian culture as it was--a true picture--not colored with the sensationalism of death and destruction as was depicted by the newspapers and 'eyewitnesses' of the time, who often carried more political ambition, than truth.

"I do exhaustive research," says Karen Kay, who prefers to be called Kay. "Even to the extent of spending my honeymoon (I've just recently 'tied the knot') on the Blackfeet reservation in Montana.

Friday, August 25, 2006 - Friday, August 25th

Yea! At last the deadline for the new book is done. It's been a few weeks, but recovery seems to be important. But not only is the deadline done, but the proposal for the next book is done, as well. Yea!

Now it's time to catch up on mailings and lists and email and reading. And for those of you who haven't been to my website lately, please have a look at the site www.freedomtofascism.com. Important info on that site.

Will be running a contest soon, so stay tuned. Will try to post the info on my website first and then here.

That's all for now. : )

Wednesday, May 31, 2006 - Deadline once again

Deadline looms and I think that I have a misunderstood word some where dealing with the heroine's profession. Normally I have no trouble throwing myself into an area I know nothing about and finding out all about it to the best of my ability and then writing about it -- but for some reason I really have some backoff on learning about archeology and anthropology -- so I think today, before I head to the computer, I will open a dictionary and clear each and every word of those definitions. Must, must do it. Think this is in the road to my writing.

Anyway, it's off to work for me again today.

Saturday, May 27, 2006 - THE LIFE OF A WORKING AUTHOR

Saturday, and have exercised, gone to the store to get tour photos printed and am trying to clear my plate so that I can concentrate on writing. Really must work on my schedule and getting up earlier and earlier since it seems that once the day has begun, there are so many other things demanding my attention.

Am having plot troubles. On my synopsis, my editor didn't like one part of the story line -- just wanted me to take it out -- and I have, the only problem being that I must fill that space with something else. Working with my hubby, I think I've come up with another way to do the same thing, but differently -- and in probably a more acceptable way -- acceptable meaning easier understood -- I'm not out to be "accepted" but being understood is very important.

These two characters definitely want to meet -- never think they will -- and circumstances are preventing them from getting together -- need to fix this.

On a lighter side, I'm an exerciser and am always watching what I eat. My hubby and I eat almost exclusively organic nowadays -- since you can't be too certain if your food is genetically modified or not -- there are no labels to warn you -- and since these seeds of "scientific genius" have so many side effects that aren't being much publicized -- we have decided the only way to truly know what one is eating is to eat organic and local. But the biggest discovery I've made recently is about fats -- coconut oil in particular and how it can help one to lost weight. But for me, the proof is in the putting -- and so I try new diets from time to time to test them on myself -- my will power (knock on wood) tends to be good and so this is not a hardship for me usually. Have been very surprised -- and pleasantly -- about fats -- coconut oil and raw butter and cod liver oil -- went to bed last night feeling like a stuffed balloon, I'd eaten so much -- and a good deal of it were these fats -- was afraid to get on the scale this morning, but I forced myself and low and behold -- wow! Instead of gaining weight, I'd lost a pound. Hmmmmm.....

Anyway, again, much to do to clear my plate so that I can concentrate on writing. Must get busy. Deadline awaits... : )

Thursday, May 25, 2006 - Life and Deadlines

Of course, when you're under deadline and really need to think of nothing else but the book -- I think this may be why writers try to go away -- off the beaten path -- so that they can concentrate -- but anyway, wouldn't you know that of course, life and livingness must intervene.

In this case it's my website, which is down at the moment, with no idea ono my part as to why. And of course since it's the weekend, no one is home to contact to fix it. I think this happened with this same server once before last year with the same message -- and it was some problem that the server was having. Whatever the problem, bear with me. I'll get it fixed one way or the other. Hmmm... Going to have to do some investigating, which is not what I'd like to be doing when under deadline.

At any rate, it's Saturday night and time to take a little time off.

More later... : )

- LIFE AS A WRITER

Website is finally back up and running, but took too much of my attention. Need to get my attention back onto the matter at hand, which is the next book.

Started reading the archeology books that I sent away for -- they are interesting, but not as interesting as researching the history of the actual things I'm writing about. But I need to know something of archeology so that I can understand my heroine a little better.

Can't decide on the name for my hero -- I was going to call him, Red Hawk, but then changed it to Red Fox, but Red Fox isn't working for me as a hero's name -- I may change it back to Red Hawk, if only because the hero liked that name better. Wrote the scene where the hero and heroine meet for the first time -- always a good scene to write.

But I must concentrate. Unfortunately, one must also promote one's work and sometimes when I've finished with a tour -- I need to relax and I seem to finally be getting to the state where I'm more relaxed -- for some reason it helps me to write. Of course, what really gets the book done are the deadlines.

Hope to have a better day of iti tomorrow. Didn't write as much today as I would have liked, though I was at it most of the day -- was tired -- and it's hard for me to write if I'm tired. Also, I think the electonics in my room are all wrong. I have two towers right now due to the fact that I still write in WP 5.1 and refuse to change. But WP5.1 is DOS and doesn't go with Windows XP, and so I have to have two towers -- actually gave me a headache today and a really tired feeling -- and I think there's just too many electonic things too close to me -- so tomorrow will only have one tower on at a time and see if that makes a difference.

Well, that's all for now. Hope for more tomorrow. : )

Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - Life as a Writer

Hard time getting going again today -- this can't keep happening -- but life has become rather...well, busy -- the story of my life, it seems -- constantly busy.

Am getting my house and life back to order after having been gone for so long on tour -- and despite it all, managed to get some production going today, but I must concentrate on doing more for longer periods of time.

Got the research books -- they were all second hand and full of mold and mildew and so I've had to ozonate them in the bathroom for almost an entire day to get rid of the mildew so that I can actually pick one up and read it. :o)

I am researching archaeology since my heroine in this new story is an archaeologist -- and have nine new books to go through.

Well, it's back to work and am hoping to get some real work done now. Up early tomorrow to write and get alot done BEFORE the rest of the world decides to come knocking on my door.

Tuesday, May 16, 2006 - Writing Diary

Am at last home from tour and am settling in to write -- am horribly under deadline after being gone for so long and so must concentrate. Unfortunately got some bad news on my plate this morning, which threw my entire day off. Have revised the name of the book to RED HAWK AND THE MERMAID.

She's not really a mermaid, but the term does fit her somehow. Writing target on pages is: 14 for tomorrow. Will probably have to work all day and evening to make that target, but that is my plan.

That's all for now. : )
