food: VORACIOUS FOR VIETNAMESE after a hard day's work shuffling about from corporate office to corporate office in upper manhattan, I shuffled home from the canal street station and stumbled into a vietnamese restaurant called Hoi An (135 w broadway betw. duane and thomas). it is a cozy place with only a couple people running the show it seems, and at 4pm it was empty so I could eat in peace. the owner was kind enough to let me order from the lunch menu, which gives you an entree, jasmine rice, salad, and soup for about $12. I chose a yellow curry chicken dish with onion and chili spice, and the egg drop and tomato soup. everything was delicious; my urge for islandic asian food was completely sated. for today. music sidebar: somewhere in the shuffle I picked up four tickets for the sleater-kinney show at irving plaza next monday night. the thermals are opening, which is very exciting. you can count on kill rock stars to book an unrivaled line-up. I first heard them at the F.A.K.E. outlet in london on my last trip there, and fell in love.

art: SPACE INVADERS ARE BACK found a signed poster for sale at Giant Robot for the Space Invader art show in paris. a few years ago I had the pleasure of experiencing first-hand the glory of these little public pop art mosaics, as the city had been newly strewn with replicas of the lovable big bads from an old atari favorite.

food: FONDUE FIASCO this evening I met a couple friends(B & D) at a fondue restaurant called Dip(416 3rd Ave. between 29th and 30th). the place had nice open air seating with a patio facing the street. when we called ahead they told us we didn't need reservations, but unfortunately the outside section was filled and we ended up waiting for 30 minutes to sit just inside. the decor at Dip is trendy-stylish, with brick red walls and dim mood lighting. the bar that night was quiet but deadly, as I paid $4 for my coke including a dollar tip. once we were seated we perused the menu, which was comprised of mostly drinks and very few food items. basically the big decision of the night was do we want swiss/gruyere or cheddar cheese fondue? B wanted cheddar, so we ordered the $30 cheddar fondue. thankfully we ordered the spinach/artichoke dip as an appetizer, otherwise I would have left the restaurant with a growling stomach. the entree(supposedly for 1-3 people) consisted of some sparse helpings of bread, carrots chunks, gargantuan cuts of cauliflower and broccoli, and apples. before we knew it, we had finished our meager portions and were hungry for more, but we just couldn't justify another $30 pot. all in all, Dip was a cool place to sit around and talk, but better suited for appetizer/dessert than the main course.

rock: BLONDE REDHEAD I must give props to the new blonde redhead album, entitled misery is a butterfly. this album has taken me for a ride for two weeks straight so far, since the cd arrived in the mail. when I listen to their last album, melody of certain damaged lemons, I tend to skip around to favorite tracks, usually going back to "melodie citronique" twice. misery is listenable the whole way through, and euphoric from start to finish. those crazy europeans went thick on the instrumentation, without sounding as overdone as the smashing pumpkins' mellon collie and the infinite sadness. I wonder how they'll pull this off live...last time I saw them they were on the red hot chili peppers/foo fighters tour, and tattooed bigmen were booing them all over the amphitheatre.
(the album art is as euphoric as the music...don't settle for downloading!)
