food: MATHMATICALLY DELICIOUS after a grueling friday, I finally tried out a waterfront seafood restaurant down the street that D and I had been eyeing since we moved into the neighborhood. Steamer's Landing (375 South End Ave) has one of the most stunning views of the hudson river, showcasing the statue of liberty to the south and the jersey city skyline across the way. we got there at the perfect time, around 7pm, and witnessed a breathtaking gradation of color until 9pm. between the two of us, we consumed: shoestring fries - more of a mcdonalds cut than true shoestring endive salad + [sweet pears + candied walnuts + gorgonzola cheese] small lump crabcakes with "asian" slaw - somehow red cabbage is asian crab-stuffed shrimp with (sufferin) sucotash and sweet potatoes creme brulee (in a round bowl) vanilla sundae with butterscotch syrup (in a round bowl) summation: pretty satisfying food + fantastic view + non-snooty crowd = great place to go when I'm lazy

rock: PRIORITY WITH NO CONFIRMATION I took a gander and picked up an album by the postal service last week, entitled give up. I'm fairly certain I made a wise choice. the thing that won me over was seeing ben gibbard's name on there(from death cab for cutie). the album is refreshingly electro-pop, buoyed throughout by little synth sounds reminiscent of my first casio synthesizer from the early 80's. ben's voice of course is satisfying in the same way as that of grandaddy's jason littel. my favorite track is number three, sleeping in, which has the catchy chorus line "don't wake me I plan on sleeping." (sleeping is a great pastime and needs to be sung about more often.)

food: LONG ISLAND HOPPING last weekend, D took me to two of his old haunts in long island. for breakfast, we hit thomas ham 'n' eggery (325 old country rd.) in carle place, ny. this local diner is compact and neat, with a small number of tables and about ten spots at the counter. the ham 'n' eggery is well worth the medium wait, especially if you order a signature skillet meal. I chose scrambled eggs and genoa salami, with a side of potatoes and a cinnamon coffee cake muffin. I dare say that this home-baked muffin can easily take on Bruce's celebrity coffee cake from freshdirect.com, it was just as tasty and tender, but with a better crumb cake top. the potatoes had a great taste to them, and they weren't too mushy nor too dry. if I ever get a chance to go back someday, I will be sure to order the apricot-stuffed french toast... for dinner, we revisited an italian restaurant called prima pasta on (795 old country rd.) in nearby westbury, ny. this was my second visit to this restaurant, but it had been a couple years. though the service was a little slow, the pasta was a homestyle delight. my "side" salad came heaped on a huge oval serving dish, which lasted me through my main course. the highlights of their menu are the make-your-own-pastas, where you can customize pasta and sauce to your liking. I selected linguine with puttanesca sauce(olives + capers + tomatoes), and D ordered lobster ravioli with vodka sauce(aka pink sauce). both main courses, were served in family-sized portions, with enough to spare for lunch the next day. the best part is that the entire bill came to just under $30 for two people.
