food + rock(?): KOREA

just a note, I'm off to south korea for a few days. I'll be sure to come back with detailed descriptions of the local cuisine. unfortunately the music there is mostly vacant pop, with amazingly few (sedate) rock bands. but if I hear anything notable I will announce it here.

food: BLUE WATER GRILL

yesterday I visited an old favorite, restaurant corporation b.r. guest's most fabulous establishment, blue water grill. I had been there a couple times before at dinnertime, but this place is just as suitable for a light (but schmancy) lunch.

blue water grill is famous for its stellar seafood, from a splendid selection of oysters to maki rolls to chilean sea bass designed with an asian twist. I dined with three coworkers, and we each ordered some sort of exotic salad dish, whether it was topped with medium-rare tuna, lobster, or chargrilled steak. the latter was my entree, and the complementing endive salad came beautifully-prepared in a cylindrical tortilla bowl. by the way, the "bread service" here is joyously delicious. for dessert I ordered peanut butter profiteroles, who knew this even existed? though a little rich for my softcore dessert tastes, those little puffs of yum were a perfect ending to a perfect little lunch.

the best part? three of us got a $40/person lunch for free today. shhh...

food: FRENCH TOAST, FRENCH DRESSING, FRENCH FRIES...

for lunch the other day I wandered around nolita with my friend D until we ended up at bistro margot(26 prince street). the small french bistro has a couple sections that extend back into a small garden area. we sat outside and enjoyed fresh air and good food. D ordered some sort of sausage sandwich, and I ordered penne pasta with tomato and basil(my old faithful). the food had a different taste to it than the norm, which is a good thing. not too pricey either, the bill came out to about $25 including tip. wait staff was fairly timely, except a bit slow to bring the check.

rock: SOUNDTRACK TO KILL BILL VOL. 2

I've been listening to the soundtrack for the latest kill bill movie for the past couple of weeks. this is yet another unlikely combination of songs put together with some finesse by director quentin tarantino. the soundtrack is a mix of oldies and latino music, including a very enlightening track by the late and trendified johnny cash. the highlight of the disc is track two, "goodnight moon," performed by shivaree. this song is one of the sexiest songs I have ever heard. in the process of belting the song out in my car, I learned most of the lyrics, which are murderously perfect for this movie.

There's a blade by the bed
And a phone in my hand
A dog on the floor
And some cash on the nightstand
When I'm all alone the dreaming stops
And I just can't stand
