Slippery
Jhawk, tj and I were at the local Crest food store and in one of the aisles there was on of those tripod, yellow things that warn you that the floor is wet. It had three languages on it, English(for those of us that still speak it, Spanish (for the next major language spoken here) and for the newest influx of immigrants to Edmond, GERMAN. I don't get it. Maybe they made the signs. There must be a secret.

Nerd Quotient
Good article on how people and corporations choose which computers they are going to use. I don't agree with everything in it, but the first part is dead on. I like the idea that "non-computer" people seek out a friend or family member with a high "nerd quotient" for computer purchasing advice.

Car
This morning at work a female coworker walks in goes to the desk of another coworker and tells him, "You car lights are on." He then asks which lights? He didn't leave any lights on. She just keeps repeating "Your car lights are on." So he asks, "Which lights? Headlights, dome light, blinker?" She just wheels around and says, "You're hopeless, I hope your car catches fire." Then she walks away. Wow, some people are not morning people.

Ding Ding...In this corner..
I, just out of curiosity, and boredom while waiting for a co-worker to drop off a software CD, did a price comparison of buying a Gateway vs. an iMac.I always hear the argument that Apple is too expensive. Well, let's just see. I tried to compare 2 machines with similar stats and features.

For Gateway I chose the Gateway Profile 4MX and for Apple the 17" iMac.

Gateway stats:
17.0" LCD Flat Panel Display
Integrated NVIDIA? GeForce4 MX400 graphics with 64MB of DDR SDRAM
Intel? Pentium? 4 Processor 2.6GHz
256MB 333MHz DDR SDRAM
80GB 7200 RPM Ultra ATA 100 Hard Drive
DVD-R/-RW/CD-RW
(6) USB, Parallel, Serial, (2) Integrated IEEE 1394 (FireWire) and (2) PS/2
v.92 Modem

iMac stats:

1GHz PowerPC G4
256MB DDR266
17-inch widescreen LCD flat
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX w/ 64MB video memory
80GB Ultra ATA drive
4x SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
v.92 Modem
Two FireWire 400 ports; 8 watts shared. Total of five USB 1.1 ports: three on computer; two on keyboard

Ok. Now price:
Gateway $2,048.00 after having to add options to match the iMac
iMac $1,799.00

I don't even have time to debate OS X and Windows XP. We should all know about the included iLife suite with OS X for no additional charge.

Blah, blah
This one co-worker (actually he was in Florida, so a co-worker in the fact he works for the same company as me), saying his laptop was broken. It worked fine connected to the LAN but when he unplugged it and went somewhere it would boot up and give an error that such and such tree was unavailable. Basically, trying to log into the LAN on Novell and not being connected. First off I told him he was talking to completely the wrong department (I don't support the LAN), but I knew what his problem was. Told him it was solar flares. He was outside right? (I knew he was because I could hear cars driving by him) He said he'd heard of that. I told him I was joking and explained his problem. When the cable is disconnected from your laptop, you're not connected. He was a cool guy is the only reason I joked with him. You know the people that can't take a joke :-P

Work
I actually heard this word used in conversation at work today.
Misconfusion
A coworker and I laughed for 10
minutes on that one.

Same guy who used the word misconfusion was having a discussion with
several others at work today. After going over some points he asked us
if we were in concurrence with him. The other 3 people in the discussion
with me gave him this look like he had just asked something in Klingon.
Then I answered yes, and all the heads snapped around to look at me like
I'd just understood his Klingon word and had responded in kind. I guess
to not seem like they didn?t know what was said, they all answered yes
too. I later had to explain the word concurrence to one of them.

Sniper
They have just released a sketch of someone they want to talk to in the case of the Virginia snipers. Won't be too hard to find him. He has mullet, scraggly facial hair, probably a wife beater t-shirt, wait, that would fit most, oh, never mind.

RPC again, and worms!
Wow, this will be intersting. The latest (this week anyway) Microsoft security flaw in the RPC portion of Windows 2000, XP is being exploited by the latest worm. MSblaster or LoveSan, whichever you want to call it. About 3 weeks ago Microsoft acknowledged that it existed, and security experts warned withing a short few weeks a worm would be seen with this exploit. Update security patches. Well, nobody listened. (Anyone even hear of this new issue? Other than those of us that read The Register, Internet News, etc.) Now it appears this worm was designed to harness a bunch of computers together for a major DOS attack against Windowsupdate.com. Beautiful. Not quite sure if this is irony or not :-P

Rant
If you were going down a toll turnpike and had gotten a ticket as you entered, would you expect to pay at some point? So then why, as you passed signs two and then one mile out, where it says PAY ahead, did you wait until Audrey the toll collector told you how much the toll was, to lean over and look through your car for money. There were only 12 cars behind you. When you couldn't find the exact change, I saw you then give the collector a large bill and then get change. I can't beleive you were that stupid. Didn't you look on the ticket to know how much the toll was? When you were getting close, why didn't, Oh never mind, I see the tag on you car now, and that could explain it.

Linux cont'd
Wow, finished my Linux install. First time through it installed fine. Then I couldn't get the GUI to load. I'm just sitting at the prompt. Hmm... Keeps saying no monitors found. Ok, I try what the help files I find all over the net say. No joy. BAH!

Try a new install is my next idea. Go through it this time, with a little better knowledge of what kind of video card I got ( :-) yes should have looked better before). Took a peek inside to find out. Ok, now it loaded, fired up the X windows with startx command. Boom, I'm in! KDE is working and I'm all set up. Now it has a problem with my sound card. Grrrr. Next project. Maybe later....

Thunderbird
I'm also trying out Thunderbird from the Mozilla project. It?s their new mail client. It looks pretty familiar to the old Netscape 6 and 7 versions of the mail client. Just stripped down a little. I'm trying it out because I've read that it's Junk filter is pretty darn good. Lots of rave's about that. The email client already in OS X has been darn good on Junk so far. It's not a Baysean (sp?) junk filter like I believe Thunderbird is supposed to have. A "learning" junk filter. We'll see. My SBC account merged with Yahoo is a pure junk mail magnet, funnelling tons of junk mail into me. My company supplied email, along with my .Mac account get maybe... uh... ZERO spam. But SBC and Yahoo seem to want me to get it. So here we are. Trying new things.

Linux cont'd
The Linux install has started. Going with Debian. Downloading a set of 2 CDs for the main boot disk, and the 'vanilla' flavor. (Cool things about Linux is all the different types and lingo). Tomorrow I plan to burn the ISOs and then do the install. Pulled the files I wanted off the Windows platform. I'm ready to start. Just got to wait on the ISO files. Should have started them earlier. I'll let y'all know how it all went.

Hazlenut
Just had a building-wide email go out. It's not Corporate or even state wide, but it reaches about 100 people anyway. Anyway, this email included the sender's Outlook Signature at the bottom. It looked like this:
John "Hazlenut" Childers
Technical Specialist -Support

Not his real name but the "Hazlenut" part is real. He doesn't go by Hazlenut and it's not a real nickname of his. Someone added it to his computer while he was away from it. Now he's had like 20 people ask him what Hazlenut means as a nickname, and people are calling him Hazlenut now.

Color = flavor
Ever been fooled by a candy's color? I'll explain.

Was asked if I wanted a Life Saver's candy. I said yes. They asked what color. Anything but yellow (stupid lemon flavor). They gave me an orange one.

Ok good. Orange flavored is good. I put it in my mouth. NOT ORANGE! I don't know what that flavor was, but it was an abhorrent creation.

That's what I don't care for in these modern days. Companies coming out with all their new "wild" flavors. Making easy colors like orange and red stand for something else rather than the orange and cherry flavors respectively. Now orange color could be banana, orange, pineapple, and coconut flavor.

Such chicanery.
