Parking
An open letter to the person who took my parking spot while I was at lunch:

I was parked there first. I was only gone for a while to get something to eat. I had to park clear out at the last few spaces of the lot and walk all the way up to the building. It was a bit chilly and windy out. I feel that, it should have been you, Mister/Misses "Come in to work whenever you feel", that should have had to walk. I was here at 7am. If I knew who you were I'd engage in some sort of passive-aggressive behavior in the work place. Move your stapler, turn off your computer monitor, take all the caps off your pens so the ink dries out. Alas I don't know who you are. I will therefore resort to giving the stink-eye to everyone that passes my desk, secure in the knowledge that "this" must be the perpatrator. I parked across 2 spaces in personal protest.

Sincerly,

jhawk

Research

According to reports released by the Jhawk Center for Research Into Things, has concluded with no substantial evidence, or more to the point, NO evidence, that drinking a beer might actually make you smarter. Associate researcher Cliff Clavin has provided an anology for the supposed theory. It is reprinted below.
Well ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

We will continue to bring any new developments as they warrant. Or whenever we feel like it.

Went to McDonalds over lunch. They didn't give me a straw! There is nothing that can be more annoying than driving off, getting down the street and you reach in the bag and there is no straw. I know, I should check the bag before I drive off. I hate being one of those people who pull up a few feet and then sit there counting the number of pickles on their burger to make sure it's correct. Then after I have my food I can't pull forward until this whack job moves. All I'm saying, is give me my straw!

At work today I had to go guard the doors to the loading dock. We always do that anytime the doors are open to see that there is no unauthorized entry. Two buildings with an alley between. You can't get into either building without passing the magnatometer and Security. Both ends of the alley are guarded with gates and guards, so where is the person going to come in from. Oh well, like I had anything better to do.

Took a picture of a Red Tailed Hawk that was sitting on the fence in my back yard. No, I don't know what it was looking for. We have nothing it would be interested in. Sent photo to Photoshop Master to see if he could put it in the photoblog. I tried with My Photocenter that comes with XP, but I gave up.
One interesting thing happened at work. A lady had to take her belt off to pass thru the magnatometer to get in the building, and her skirt fell off. Well, not really off, it just started unwrapping. No, I wasn't there, but heard about it. Hey, we are serious about security. Other than that I just collected my pay. I guess I'll go back tomorrow for more.

Tumbleweed
Went outside while at work today while taking a break in the afternoon. Our office building is out on the edge of the city. There are areas around that are still just large fields, not developed real estate yet. Since we're in the midwest we get all the fun things that around here that you would get further out into the country.

When I arrived to my car out in the parking lot, there was a HUGE tumbleweed jammed between my car and the Ford Explorer next to me. This tumbleweed was enourmous! It's extremely windy outside right now. I managed to dislodge this tumbleweed from the two cars. Trying not to scratch either car. Successful! I stood this thing up next to me. Now, I'm 6'4" tall, and this was as tall as me or a little bit more. And really wide. Ok, now I've got it out. What do I do with it? I tried to jam it into this bush nearby my car to see if it would hold it in place. The second I let go of the tumbleweed, it was off like a shot. The wind caught it like a sail and that thing went racing through the parking lot like a bullet. It raced past several other people outside and we all just stood there laughing. Seeing a tumbleweed that's 7ft in diameter flying past you is quite a sight.

*update*
Here's a place that would allow you to purchase your own tumbleweeds if in fact you were so inclined.

Radio sucks. It just does. Clear Channel has killed variety. Of course, they don't care about it either.

Ever wonder why you can drive from city to city and hear the exact same songs in each place? It's not because they're all on the top of the charts. The same company is making the playlists for each. Therefore, causing the ones they want played the most to make it onto the music charts.

BACK!
I'm now addicted to Jones Soda. Berry White flavor!

I've been tempted to park my car across 2 parking spaces. My car is SO much more important and nicer than everyone elses. You're willing to walk a little bit further right? You understand my need to park this way right?

Yes that was sarcasm. :-P

Which reminds me of something that I saw a few days ago. I was at that supermarket. There was one space open near the front. This car came by it, and was heading down the wrong way in the aisle. It wanted that spot though. So, the driver, she decides to back into the spot. You know these types. Always backing into their parking spots. Like this makes them look cooler, or shaves valuable seconds off their getaway time after purchasing cracked wheat bread. Anyway, this girl is pulling in, looking around at all of us walking through the parking lot. She fails to look in the correct direction when backing a car though. Yep, backwards. Backs right into a light pole. :-P I found it amusing anyway.

At work, in keeping with the alert status being raised to orange,(a side note; I thought there was just orange, nooooo, there are degrees of orange. There is high orange, which is not quite as orange as the General Lee, but more orange than Mary Kay's Orange Marmelade Semi-gloss Aloe Bearing Long-Lastine lipstick, and low orange, which I think is just orange.) we have put a 3 foot high fence around the entire block. 12 foot farther from the curb than normal. This means that patrons of the Federal Court now can't just drop off people because we have usurped that lane, they have to go to the next block and walk back. Of course, making some lawyer unhappy is sometimes good.

The only things she was carrying were several Manilow albums". [BBC News,]

Idiots
Want something to laugh at? Try this.

Talk about naive and pointless. Talking about USA has no borders. Thank God it does. On a practical sense they are our first line of defense against people getting into our country who wish to do us harm and the first checkpoint to help curb the continous flow of drugs flowing into our country. Yes, what an idealistic view to thing that making friends on the internet and conversing with them helps create her perfect utopia of friendly cooperation and human understanding. We don't live in the internet. The real world is a hard place. There are rulers of countries whose bending their every action to keep themselves in power at the expense of the people they rule. In costs of their futures and even their lives and freedom.

She talks about mothers making dinner for their kids, and how they don't deserve to be anihalated. Great point. I'm sure some of those mothers weren't too worried about dinner when they saw thier children gasping and dying after having chemical weapons used on them.

A USA without borders. I hope not. I'm glad it's just a inane idea in the head of some blogger like me. Making friends around the world via the internet is a great thing. You can learn about someone elses culture and their country. No doubt she hasn't met or befriended any Al Qaeda members through here online community. Ones who would love nothing more than to be able to slit her throat just because she lives in the USA. Probably hasn't met anyone of the goons Saddam got to exterminate his politcal enemies. Those people don't blog.

Log this!
Via the Arcata Police Logs.

5:48 p.m. The handicapped parking space behind an historic Plaza storehouse is reserved for the near-exclusive use of: 1. People who wish to use the nearby ATM and leave their car idling there for "just a second," 2. SUV owners with atrophied but not exactly handicapped legs who can't peril the endless trek from the parking lot across the street, and 3. Cell phone conversationalists who need a place to jaber in an idling car, since leaving the motor running morally justifies displacing a genuinely mobility-impaired person from parking close to the building. And that's the way of the world.

Perfect.

Speakerphone
I just called a guy in another department. He wanted to type up something in email while we talked. He told me he was going to put me on speakerphone (which I hate). He then paused for like 30 seconds and said, "I use the speakerphone so my hands are free." Really? That's how he uses his speakerphone? I just pictured him in his office holding the speakerphone up to his face so he could talk.

Mac and USB
Been trying to get a certain cell phone to install it's USB cable for a wireless data kit. Things go great on 98/ME/2000/XP. It says that, yes, the CD contains drivers for Mac too. Great! It doesn't tell me though what OS it supports. Fine, I'll try OSX and 9.1. No joy in either OS. The CD has no drivers for Mac! The PDF file instructions say I should be able to open the USB folder and choose USBinstaller. No such file. I go to their site, and they have an updated zip file full of new drivers since 2/3/2003. Great! Download. Same instructions. This time there isn't even a USB folder?????? Ok, instructions are WAY off. Explore folders and there are no installer programs in it. Just a bunch of .inf files. I gave up. I was only curious to see if I could get it to work. It wasn't important. Just frustrating.

Parking
Ever drive around the parking lot looking for a space? We all have. Ever catch yourself circling the lot more than once saying the entire time, "There will be a closer spot in the next row." Then you have that mini-debate going on in your head. Is this close enough? Is that guy leaving? How much closer really is that spot over there, and can I beat that car to it?

Corporate Water
There is nothing like the corporate world to allow you to view inept people and the stupid things they do.

In my part of the building we have a Culligan water cooler. When it's empty people often take it upon themselves to place another bottle on the cooler. More often than not it's the people who have no concept of how to do this.

Common mistakes:
The bottle does have to end up upside on top of the cooler, but you don't start the bottle that way. It'll put water on the floor.

After tilting the water bottle to a certain degree it will start to pour water onto the floor. It's best to keep from tilting it until it's over the opening of the cooler.

The bottles are a little heavy. If you don't think you can lift it. Don't.

It's at least once a week that we have a fan back there, blowing on the carpet to dry it out after a failed attempt at changing water.

From the Oklahoma Gazette. "Motorist, B.J. Justin Lundin, 20, stopped his car in the middle of a two-lane road near Weatherford,Texas in Jan, got out, and attacked the driver behind him in a fit of road rage over the driver having earlier objected to Lundin's tailgating. Lundin was the struck and killed by another car that was trying to get around the two cars". Time again to thin the herd.

Nothing and Shoes
All morning I've been wondering, what do I do a post about? Nothing apparently. I can think of no topic that I want to write about. That's just fine.

That being said. I broke a shoelace this morning. On my Doc Martens. I wear them so much that the tired old laces just gave it up today. They couldn't hold together under the stress. Now I've got one shoe with an elegant bow tied perfectly, and another one with this horrible short stubby thing.

Weee
They've installed the self checkout lanes at the supermarket that I frequent here. It's about time too. A little behind the times. Anyway, yesterday and today are the first days they are in service. As you walk toward the checkout counters they try to get you to try out the new service. They invite you over to one of the machines and help walk you through it, I'm guessing the excuritaiting step by step instuction that appears on the screen just isn't enough. The funniest thing is to see the look on the old peoples faces when they're asked to try one out. Their eyes get huge and glazed over. A blank stare appears on their face. They are terrified of that thing. It's pure fun!

I was listening to the comentary about the girl that faces backwards when the National Anthem is played before each game. There has been a fair amount of word play about this in the news. Can't remember the name of the school, just that it is a Division III school. I agree she has the right to demonstrate anyway she sees fit comma but comma she is not doing that on my team. I couldn't bench her, cause some lily-livered ACLU lawyer would sue me. She would stay in the locker room until the anthem is over. We are paying tribute to our flag and if you don't want to, you can sit on the can until we are done, or she would suddenly not be good enough to stay on the team. Something about her dribbling skills or some such. She has taken it upon herself to put the other players on a position they may not want to be in. Of course it has given the school the press they weren't getting before. Now their games are packed. That's my opinion, I could be wrong.

I made cajun ribs for dinner on Tuesday night. We had some country style pork ribs. We didn't want to grill them or smoke them as it was like 10 degrees and icy outside. I've never myself seen cajun ribs. James and I were contemplating how to cook these ribs then, if we couldn't go outside. We decided in the crock pot and cover them in cajun spices. Sounded odd to us too. They actually turned out excelent! We let them cook for like 4 hours so they were really done. Also they were spicy! MMMmmm Good!

Ok, Ok, so I get testy at little things. I'm sure the USPS spent alot of money to provide a machine that dispenses stamps in any denomination you could ask for. All that is required is for you to insert an amount greater than or equal to the amount of stamps you want to buy. So why, oh why do you continue to come into the line and waste my (and others I might add) time buying a book of stamps and then pay with a 20 dollar bill, when you could have done the same outside. Get the same result, stamps and change. It would have made my day go so much better.

Common sense
The temperature has dropped 5 degrees in an hour, it's raining. It's starting to freeze. It's going to be snowing soon.

We got an email from our building supervisor that it's getting freezing and wet out. So there might be ice when you go outside. So be careful.

Ok, so who didn't know that really cold air plus water equals ice?

If I was sending out that email (first of all I wouldn't have sent it at all) it would have said, "Use common sense. If you don't you fall on your ass."

Fish for books!
If I had Library fines I know what I'd do with this!

PAY OFF YOUR LIBRARY FINES WITH FISH

If you have outstanding fines at the Public Library, you'll soon have a chance to take care of them without paying any money. Head of the Adult Circulation Department Diane Waite tells KSAL News that the week of March 9th through the 15th you can pay off your fines with fish. Waite says you can bring in any food item that is related to fish.? All of the food collected will be donated to the Community Aid Food Bank. Waite says that non-perishable food can be dropped of at the library, while perishable foods like frozen fish need to be taken to the food bank. For more details on fish for fines contact the Public Library

Even though they say to take frozen fish to the food bank, I'd still come in with a halibut or something.
